Release Date: October 3, 2011 Habitat for Humanity York Region (“Habitat York”) would like to advise the media of the purchase of land in Keswick, Ontario. Planning and construction of two semi-detached units will begin immediately. Land Purchase Transaction Finalized September 30th
In response to the growing need for affordable housing in York Region, Habitat York has purchased a lot on Lake Drive in Keswick, and has initiated plans to construct two (2) semi-detached homes on the property. Habitat York hopes to initiate construction later this year, with completion anticipated for mid-2012. Habitat York is currently in the process of selecting the families who will purchase these homes, who will be expected to complete 500 hours of sweat equity on their homes or in the ReStore, in lieu of a financial down payment. About Habitat York: Habitat York builds simple, decent and affordable homes in partnership with the community and with the families who will own them. All homes are built almost completely by volunteers using building materials, land and money donated by individuals, businesses, and various community groups.Families purchase their home from Habitat and make monthly payments on their no-interest mortgages over a period of 20 to 30 years. In addition, families are required to complete a minimum of 500 hours of ‘sweat equity’ by volunteering to help build their own home, other Habitat homes or helping us in other ways. The Habitat approach provides families with a hand up, not a hand out.
